Bryan Vorndran, assistant director of the FBI’s cyber division, and David Frederick, executive director of the National Security Agency’s U.S. Cyber Command, are scheduled to keynote the summit.
Sean Connelly serves as the Trusted Internet Connections (TIC) Program Manager and Senior Cybersecurity Architect, Cybersecurity Division (CSD) at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) within the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The TIC initiative is the federal government’s strategy to securely protect government networks that connect to the Internet and cloud providers. CISA’s TIC Program Office works with a wide-spectrum of partners across government and industry and leads the way at enhancing network security across the federal enterprise horizon. Additionally Mr. Connelly was a co-author of the Cloud Security Technical Reference Architecture (CSTRA) designed to guide agencies’ secure migration to the cloud by explaining considerations for shared services, cloud migration, and cloud security posture management; the Zero Trust Maturity Model which assists agencies in the development of their zero trust strategies and implementation plans, and presents ways in which various CISA services can support zero trust solutions across agencies; and finally, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Special Publication (SP) 800-207, Zero Trust Architecture, which discusses the core logical components that make up a zero trust architecture.
Mr. David E. Frederick, Jr is the Executive Director, United States Cyber Command (USCYBERCOM), serving as the highest ranking civilian in the command. Mr. Frederick assists the Commander in leading a cyber mission force of over 12,000 people. His portfolio focuses on strategic management initiatives to improve cyber operations and technical capabilities, shaping a budget totaling in the billions. He also oversees the command’s academic engagement network. Prior to this role, Dave served as Deputy Director of the NSA Cybersecurity Directorate, co- leading design and stand-up of the new directorate. He served as Chief of NSA’s Strategic Counter Cyber Operations office from 2016 to 2018. He represented NSA at the National Security Council on cyber policy matters and oversaw counter-cyber campaigns. After serving in the United States Army as a signals intelligence (SIGINT) analyst and Korean linguist, Mr. Frederick joined NSA in 1996. He held a number of managerial, strategic planning, and technical positions prior to promotion to the senior executive service. In addition to his recent cyber roles, his senior executive assignments include: Chief of SIGINT Targeting Strategy and Mission Integration, Special United States Liaison Advisor to a key foreign partner, Deputy Inspector General, Director of the Community Electronic Intelligence (ELINT) Management Office, and Associate Deputy Director for Tech SIGINT & Electronic Warfare. Mr. Frederick received numerous honors for his work; he was awarded Presidential Rank Awards (Meritorious Executive) in 2012 and 2017; the National Intelligence Superior Service Medal; a key foreign partner’s National Security Service Medal; and the NSA/CSS Meritorious Civilian Service Award, along with other Joint and Army military awards. EDUCATION: Mr. Frederick completed the Defense Language Institute Korean Basic Course in 1990. He graduated from the University of Maryland University College in 1994 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History (Honors). He received his MBA (Finance) from Colorado State University in 1998. He has completed extensive technical training with the National Cryptologic School as well as executive leadership courses at George Washington University and the Harvard Kennedy School.
Dr. Brian G. Hermann is Chief of the Enterprise Services Devleopment Division and the Unified Capabilities Portfolio Manager at the Defense Information Systems Agency. He is responsible for developing and implementing information technology services and strategies for unification of communications and collaboration services for the DoD-Wide Enterprise. A retired U.S. Air Force communications and cyber Officer, Dr. Hermann has served in a variety of communications, acquisition-related, software, test and evaluation, information technology, and educational positions. He developed techniques for evaluating software product maturity and reliability used for major acquisition programs including JSTARS, the CV-22, and the E-3 Radar System Improvement Program for the AWACS. He also has extensive experience teaching systems and software engineering, delivering information technology services, and leading educational departments. As a National Defense Fellow, he published research on a normative U.S. Government response to cyber attacks. After military retirement, Dr. Hermann spent several years in industry before rejoining the government in July 2016 in his current capacity.
Jeff Jones is responsible for synchronizing By Light's DoD, Federal, and Commercial cyber initiatives, from strategic to tactical, across the enterprise. Prior to joining By Light, Jeff spent over 20 years in the DoD, in a uniformed and Civilian capacity. Most recently, he was a member of DoD’s Senior Executive Service and served as the Vice Director and Deputy Chief Information Officer for the Joint Chiefs of Staff J6. Prior to serving with the Joint Staff, Jeff served as the Executive Director, Joint Force Headquarter-Department of Defense Information Network (JFHQ-DODIN), United States Cyber Command. These positions, combined with his numerous years of experience with Army Cyber Command, afforded Jeff an opportunity to work across the full range of cyberspace operations, transport, space, PNT, cryptography, resource management, and congressional engagement. Jeff is a graduate of the US Army War College, and holds Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees in Computer Science.
Gentry Lane is the CEO & Founder of ANOVA Intelligence, a venture-backed cyber national security software company that serves American critical infrastructure companies. She holds a DoD-appointed position to the NATO Science & Technology Organization tech panel on the cyber defense of military systems, is a Fellow at the Potomac Institute for Policy Studies, and is a visiting fellow at the National Security Institute at George Mason University's Antonin Scalia Law School. Ms. Lane is a senior software executive and statistician. She worked with Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s computational security department to develop and commercialize groundbreaking discoveries in the fields of computational anomaly detection and memory forensics. Ms. Lane is a frequent speaker on cyber national security, an internationally recognized subject matter expert on cyberconflict strategy, and she advises members of Congress, NATO and U.S. defense and intelligence leaders. A scholar of military strategy, she believes deterrence in the cyber domain is essential for the preservation of liberal democracies and a free, open, interoperable internet. A staunch STEMinist, Ms. Lane mentors young women interested in technology with national security applications and is a board advisor to deep tech startups. She is bilingual (English & French).
Colonel Michael S. Medgyessy is the Chief Information Officer & Chief Data Officer for the Air Force Intelligence Community. In this role, he is responsible for the architecture, cybersecurity, governance and modernization of the Air Force Intelligence Information Enterprise and ISR mission systems valued at $55B. Col Medgyessy has previously served the President in the White House Communications Agency as the Director of Acquisition and Modernization. He also served as the commander of the 89th Communications Squadron, and the 691st Cyber Operations Squadron. He served in the Joint Special Operations Command, combat communications, Air Operations Center, Network Operations Support Center, MAJCOM and Air Staff positions. He has served duties as Commander, Chief Technology Officer, Director of Operations, communications engineer, and program manager. His career includes deployments to both Iraq and Afghanistan.
Emmett is a technical, professional and management executive with 19 years of experience in Industrial Controls and Cyber Security. His Industrial Cyber Security experience has focused on threat intelligence, vulnerability research, vulnerability assessment, cyber programs, and remediation for critical infrastructure. He has managed teams in the design, construction, and commissioning of controls systems used in manufacturing, heavy industrial, chemicals, oil and gas, and energy sectors. And he is fluent in control system design standards, operational requirements, and multi-disciplinary project management. When off work Emmett enjoys volunteering and anything to do with aviation and air sports.
Dave currently serves as a Senior Counselor at Palantir, where he focuses on assisting across the US Government, Allied Partner, and Commercial business. Dave also serves as a Senior Advisor to the Founders and CEOs of CalypsoAI, Pallas Advisors, and Digital Collective Venture Capital. He is on the Federal Advisory Board of Fortem Technologies and is a Board Member at Valkyrie Capital Labs. Previously, he served as the Department of Defense’s (DOD) first-Chief Data Officer (CDO). In this role, he stood up DOD’s Chief Data Office and instilled a strong focus on warfighter needs, data governance, and a data ready workforce to inspire a data-driven culture across the department. He developed the DOD’s first Data Strategy, Data Decrees, and Joint All Domain Command and Control Data (JADC2) Implementation Plan. Dave crafted and oversaw the establishment of Chief Data Offices across the department and built a vibrant and diverse data community of interest. Immediately prior, Dave was the United States Special Operations Command’s (USSOCOM) first-CDO and the Director of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for the United States’ Special Forces. In this role as a direct report to the USSOCOM Commander, he was responsible for the creation of a data-driven decision-making culture while leading the integration of data-driven technologies across all US Special Operations Forces (SOF). Dave served as the Associate Director for Technology Investment at the Secretary of the Air Force’s (SAF) Concept Development and Management Office. His primary task was to stand up and lead the DOD’s first training quality data production refinery for the Algorithmic Warfare Cross Functional Team (aka, Project Maven), which was the DoD’s pathfinding AI effort. Dave was previously the Deputy Director of Intelligence at USSOCOM and the United States Central Command (USCENTCOM). At USSOCOM his primary portfolio was on building partner nation and US interagency support for Operation Gallant Phoenix, which was the SOF effort to stem foreign terrorist fighter flows to Iraq, Syria, and Afghanistan. At USCENTCOM, Dave led the Intelligence Directorate’s Divisions for Operations, Plans, Intelligence Surveillance, and Reconnaissance, and Foreign Disclosure/Special Security Office. While at USCENTCOM he served in Afghanistan for a year as the Senior Intelligence Advisor to the Commander of the International Security and Assistance Force during 2010/2011. At the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI), Dave was the Deputy Associate Director of National Intelligence for Afghanistan and Pakistan (ADNI Af/Pak). In this role, he was responsible for ensuring strategic alignment of the Intelligence Community’s (IC) Af/Pak and counter-terrorism missions. Dave regularly represented the senior-IC position on Af/Pak matters at the White House and with congressional leaders. Dave is a former-Marine who served across echelons at various east coast United States Marine Corps (USMC) elements setting the stage for numerous deployments throughout the US Africa Command (USAFRICOM), US Central Command (USCENTCOM) US European Command (USEUCOM), US Indo-Pacific Command (USINDOPACOM), and US Southern Command (USSOUTHCOM).
Bryan A. Vorndran was named assistant director of the FBI’s Cyber Division in March 2021. Mr. Vorndran had most recently served as the special agent in charge of the New Orleans Field Office. Mr. Vorndran joined the FBI as a special agent in 2003. He was first assigned to the Washington Field Office, where he primarily investigated criminal enterprises trafficking cocaine and heroin. In 2008, he spent five months as part of the International Contract Corruption Task Force in Afghanistan. He was promoted to supervisory special agent in 2009 and was assigned to the Counterterrorism Division at Headquarters; he was promoted to unit chief in 2012. In 2013, Mr. Vorndran was named to lead the Washington Field Office’s Joint Terrorism Task Force. He was promoted to assistant special agent in charge of the cyber and counterintelligence programs at the Baltimore Field Office in 2016. The next year, he was promoted to chief of the Strategic Operations Section of the Counterterrorism Division at Headquarters. Mr. Vorndran was named a deputy assistant director of the Criminal Investigative Division in 2018. As a deputy, Mr. Vorndran oversaw FBI programs intended to help dismantle transnational criminal organizations impacting the United States, combat violent and gang-related violent crimes, and counter crimes against children. In 2019, Mr. Vorndran was named the special agent in charge of the New Orleans Field Office. Before joining the Bureau, Mr. Vorndran was an engineer for The Procter & Gamble Co. and for Merck & Co. He earned a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Lafayette College in 1998 and a Master of Business Administration from the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan in 2012.
